Azure Information Protection Troubleshooting (Force Templates Update)

In the next series of articles, we will be focused on how to troubleshoot and resolve common and special issues that can occur when working with Azure Information Protection.

Sometimes we’re required to replace existing templates in AIP, because many users complain that they do not see changes and the only solution is to perform the deletion of the AIP profile and refresh the policy, and then the end-users can view all the changes we made at the AIP template.

There are few options to know when the last update occurs and force templates update and refresh the changes.

Check Last Time and Force Update

The first option is to start to check the Last Update value and to view the current state you can check via the following registry path:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\MSIPC

Note: The full path needs to be with template key, for example:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\MSIPC\00856c22-c698-4300-838d-cd1caebde34b.rms.eu.aadrm.com\Template\eshlomo@elishlomo.us

On the “LastUpdatedTime” you have got the last update from the Azure RMS.

The second option is to Force Update with the registry value that can be in values of days or even seconds with the following keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\MSIPC
Dword: TemplateUpdateFrequencyInSeconds

Note: Define value for the data, which specifies the frequency in days to download any changes to a downloaded template

To force update frequency in seconds:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\MSIPC
Dword:TemplateUpdateFrequencyInSeconds

Note: Minimum of 1 second

In some scenario, you need to delete the LastUpdatedTime value to force update
In a simple scenario, you don’t need to delete the local folder or other registry values to force an update.
