Azure Information Protection Troubleshooting (Reset Client)
In the next series of articles, we will understand how to troubleshoot and resolve common and special issues that can occur when working with Azure Information Protection.
When user registering to the RMS service the client retrieve few settings that including templates, licenses, GICs (RACs), and etc. and add those settings to the registry and to the local folder.
Sometimes and for some reason when working the end-user cannot retrieve the template or other policy from the AIP service or in another scenario cannot connect to the RMS service.
How to Reset AIP\AZRMS Client
To reset or refresh the AIP client follow these actions:
- Make sure to back up the following registry keys before making any actions
- Close all Office applications
Step 1
On Regedit go to the following path:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\DRM

Delete DefaultServer and DefaultServerURL values (*In some scenario you can delete the DRM key)
Step 2
Then go to the following path:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\MSIPC

Delete the key that belongs to your RMS service (in Azure RMS and my case its discover.aadrm.com)
Step 3
The next step goes to the AppData folder on the following location:
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\MSIPC
Delete the MSIPC folder

Once registry values and folder deleted you can connect to the RMS service.
